Focus on sustainability has shifted from a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘must have’ for many companies taking into account sustainability legislation being recently implemented or in the final negotiation phase at European level. To name a few developments, a provisional agreement at EU level was reached on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD) in December 2023. The CSDD requires social and environmental due diligence and actions to put a stop to adverse impacts. Last January, the European Parliament approved a directive banning generic green claims such as ‘environmentally friendly’. Further rules on green claims are scheduled for voting in the upcoming months.
